About Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles:

The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles is leading the fight to END EPILEPSY and overcome challenges created by seizures by focusing on Care, Advocacy, Research and Education. Through these areas of focus, we offer a range of services and programs to help, support, advocate for, and empower those who are affected by epilepsy and their caregivers. We also support research to accelerate cures for the epilepsies, support the training and work of new pediatric epilepsy specialists, and also seek to educate the general public to better understand epilepsy/seizure disorders, and fight to END EPILEPSY.

We are looking for a full-time Communications Manager to lead public and media relations for the annual Los Angeles Walk to End Epilepsy in November 2017. This position has the potential to evolve into a full-time role with our national organization, Epilepsy Foundation, to create and execute a consistent and engaging nationwide brand communications strategy.

Position

The Communications Manager will be immediately responsible for all PR support surrounding the Walk to End Epilepsy on November 5th, 2017 held in Los Angeles. The transition to the national position will be dependent upon a mutual agreement and the working relationship evolving in scope of work and outreach to different markets throughout the nation. This future role would involve working closely with our marketing team to develop a long term communications/brand strategy to amplify key foundation moments, building and maintaining our database of media contacts, celebrity and influencer contacts, and acting as a liaison for internal communications across our national team, including doctors, partners, sponsors and board members.

Below is an overview of essential duties:

PR Support for the Walk to End Epilepsy - The upcoming Walk will be November 5th, 2017. The Communications Manager will work with our staff team to develop and execute a strategy to secure media coverage and attendance for the event. This will include developing and issuing compelling press releases, pursuing placement of walk related stories in key print, broadcast and calendar listings, on-site support, celebrity wrangling, media management, and recapping/reporting.

Overarching Storytelling & Media Relations - The Communications Manager will work closely with our community to consistently develop storylines to keep press coverage momentum throughout the year. We have a number of exciting upcoming events to promote, and amazing stories from the families and doctors we work with just waiting to be told.

Internal Communications - The Communications Manager will coordinate messaging across the internal team. This consists of creating and distributing newsletters to the team and community, working closely with board members to leverage their resources, and weigh in all brand messaging.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelors degree in Journalism, Communications or Marketing, along with 4-6 years experience in the Communications/Public Relations industry.

Must have interest and knowledge in non-profit/charity, foundations, walk/run initiatives, and the LA and national media market.

Candidates should be responsible, dependable, organized, deadline-oriented and creative.

Must have the ability to initiate and execute creative and innovative campaign ideas.

Should be able to manage own time, establish schedules and meet deadlines.

Fluency in Spanish (written and verbal) is an asset.

Candidates must have strong written and verbal communications as well as ingenuity and eagerness to learn.

Have MAC knowledge, familiar with iWork and Microsoft Office, impeccable writing / editing skills and strong communication skills.

Proficient with PR media databases a plus (Cision, Meltwater, etc.)
